Great lens for the price, November 26, 2008 By M. Mitchell (Gainesville, FL) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO-M "Motorized" DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens with Built-in Motor Drive for Nikon SLR Cameras Including D40, D40X, & D60 (Electronics) I've been using this lens on my D40 for the last month and so far I'm impressed. Images are very sharp, even at the edges, throughout the zoom range. After reading some of the other reviews, I was a little leery of this lens and was prepared to return it if I wasn't satisfied. As soon as it was delivered, I borrowed a friend's Nikon 70-300mm and took multiple shots of the same subject using both lenses on the same D40. When we compared the images, it was obvious that the Sigma was at least as clear as the Nikon! OK, maybe it doesn't feel as substantial as the Nikon, but at half the price it's a fantastic buy and should be all the average D40 owner will need. Strongly recommended!

Sigma 70-300mm, October 7, 2008 This review is from: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO-M "Motorized" DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens with Built-in Motor Drive for Nikon SLR Cameras Including D40, D40X, & D60 (Electronics) This is a great lens, it's quite sharp and feels sturdy. It's very near the optical quality of the Nikon 70-300, almost as sharp, though chromatic aberration is a bit of a problem at the longer focal lengths. However, the Nikon 70-300 doesn't come close to this lens' 1:2 reproduction ratio.
Only downside is that the autofocus is very noisy and doesn't work well and stalls all the time in low light, but for the price it's a very minor issue.

value for money, February 14, 2009 By This review is from: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO-M "Motorized" DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens with Built-in Motor Drive for Nikon SLR Cameras Including D40, D40X, & D60 (Electronics) Bought this lens as a macro and zoom lens. I was very happy with results. Macro shots are miles better than Nikon 70-300G or VR, as it gets a very close 1:2. Not super sharp at 300 but I am more than happy as the center is sharp enough for my liking.
Flare is quite controllable, though the shake at 300mm at quite noticable if you have shaky hands. It also makes a nice portraits lens as the bokeh is quite pleasent IMHO. So far I'm quite happy with the results.
The lens is motorised but I believe this is quite different than HSM that Sigma has on other more expensive lenses(hence it does not has the HSM designation on it). You cannot focus manually as you would on HSM lenses. You need to set it to M first, then you only you can focus manually. The motor is quite loud and autofocus is bit slow on the longer end. But for the price, this lens is really a excellent value for money.
